Jennifer Burger

College Journalism Network Editor

Jennifer Burger is the editor of the College Journalism Network, a fellowship program at CalMatters for student journalists throughout the state. She guides students through the process of reporting on how state policy impacts college affordability, civil rights, student support, workforce development, and other key issues. 

Jennifer is passionate about mentoring student journalists. For 10 years, she advised student media and taught journalism courses at Cal State Bakersfield, including government and data reporting, features writing and multimedia. There, she received the Outstanding Lecturer award and led the student news organization, The Runner, which earned several state and national awards during her tenure. Jennifer volunteers to teach workshops each year at the Associated Collegiate Press National College Media Conference and serves on the board of the California College Media Association.

Before teaching, Jennifer worked as a reporter and editor for The Bakersfield Californian, where she received the Publisher’s Excellence Award and was on a team of finalists for the Associated Press Managing Editors Online Convergence Awards. She also worked as a news and features reporter for ANG Newspapers (now Bay Area News Group) in the East San Francisco Bay Area, where her work was recognized by the East Bay Press Club and California News Publishers Association. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Sacramento State University and a master’s in journalism from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
